Breaking Through Process Bottlenecks: An Innovative Solution for Stamping and Anodizing Small Aluminum Alloy Discs with CD Patterns

2026-05-22

In the field of precision machining for aluminum alloys, the integration of anodizing and CD pattern (concentric circle) processes has long presented a significant challenge in the production of cosmetic components. Recently, Dongguan Tengtoo Aluminum Products Co., Ltd. received a custom order from a new client: small aluminum alloy discs—20mm in diameter and 1mm thick—requiring a decorative CD pattern finish applied after the surface anodizing process. However, traditional processing methods exposed severe operational pain points when applied to mass production.

The Fatal Flaws of Traditional Processes

In conventional workflows, such small aluminum alloy parts typically require individual stamping and forming before undergoing rack-based anodizing. Yet, due to their diminutive size and lack of effective mounting points, these small discs present significant difficulties during anodizing. Not only is the fixturing efficiency extremely low, but the parts are also highly susceptible to defects—such as rack marks, uneven oxide films, and color variations—caused by poor electrical contact. Repeated rework not only drives up processing costs but, more critically, compromises the decorative quality of the CD patterns, failing to meet the client's stringent requirements for visual consistency. For precision aluminum machining operations striving for high yield rates, this undoubtedly constitutes a major obstacle within the production chain.

Tengtoo’s Innovative Solution: Full-Sheet Stamping + Synchronized Anodizing

To address this challenge, the engineering team at Tengtoo—leveraging years of experience in aluminum processing and surface treatment—proposed a revolutionary process optimization solution:

1.  Full-Sheet Stamping: Specialized stamping dies are utilized to stamp all the small discs simultaneously from a single sheet of aluminum. The discs remain attached to the parent sheet via tiny connecting tabs, eliminating the need for premature separation.

2.  Full-Sheet Anodizing: The entire aluminum sheet—with the discs still attached—is treated as a single workpiece and subjected to a specialized sheet-based anodizing process. This method ensures stable fixturing and uniform current distribution, thereby completely eliminating the issues associated with individual rack marks on small parts. The resulting oxide film features consistent thickness, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent CD pattern machining.

3.  CD Pattern Machining & Separation: Once anodizing is complete, the CD patterns are machined onto all the discs while they remain attached to the full sheet, ensuring the concentric grooves are uniform and continuous across the entire batch. Finally, a simple procedure is used to detach the discs from the parent sheet, yielding the finished products.

The Multifaceted Value of Process Optimization

Substantial Cost Reduction: By enabling the clamping and anodizing of entire panels—rather than individual parts—processing efficiency has increased more than fivefold. This eliminates the labor costs associated with individual handling and minimizes scrap losses, resulting in a reduction of approximately 30% in per-unit processing costs.

Significant Improvement in Yield Rate: Defects such as contact marks, color variations, and uneven anodizing have been eliminated. Consequently, the yield rate for anodizing has surged from 75%—typical of traditional processes—to over 99%, while ensuring consistent quality in CD-pattern surface textures.

Drastically Shortened Production Cycles: By eliminating the need for repeated individual clamping and rework/repair stages, the overall production cycle has been shortened by 40%, enabling us to respond rapidly to customer demands for large-volume orders.
